Week 3 Trip to The Mines

On the day that our group had a trip to The Mines, we decided to split our group by two big groups. Each group consist of five peoples and tried to take a research on different place. Well my group decided to go to the Tanjung Golden Cinema or TGC and did our research there.

Location : The Mines - Cinema (Tanjung Golden Cinema)

So basically the TGC is the kind of cinema that the people usually watch a movie or just going to have fun with family. The TGC itself has five studios full of sorround sound and big screen. There are 3 big studios and 2 small studios, but it still give you the same experience or fun wherever studio you take.

Our research go for the group of audience that enjoy or usually came to watch in that cinema. From our research we found that the group of teenagers spend a lot of time to go to this cinema, from the Assistant Manager, Ms Lyana we get that the time the teenagers go to this cinema are Tuesday, Wednesday, and the weekend Saturday and Sunday, while the group of Family just go to this cinema just around weekend Saturday and Sunday.

When we ask what is the different between this cinema and the others cinema in Malaysia, are the taste of the TGC Popcorn. Because its much nice and sweet than the other cinema can offers.Another things that we get from our research is asking the question directly to the target audience. At that time that is around 11.00 to 12.00 am, that the average people watching is 50 peoples. And most of them are teenagers.
  1. We found a group of teenagers that come to watching a movie at that time, they stated that they watch the movie frequently 2 times a month,
  2. They always watch the movie as a group, together with their friends,
  3. The movie that they watch are recommended by a friends,
  4. And they just watching the movie first not see the review before they watch.

Pre-Words For Media Anthropology

Media Anthropology is an area of study within social or cultural anthropology that emphasizes ethnographic studies as a means of understanding producers, audiences, and other cultural and social aspects of mass media.

The anthropology of media is a fairly inter-disciplinary area, with a wide range of other influences. The theories used in the anthropology of media range from practice approaches, attributable to theorists such as Pierre Bourdieu, as well as discussions of the appropriation and adaptation of new technologies and practices. Theoretical approaches have also been picked up from visual anthropology and from film theory as well as from studies of ritual and performance studies (e.g. dance and theatre). Theoretical discussions have also been picked up from studies of consumption, audience reception in media studies, new media and network theories, theories of globalisation, theories of international civil society, and discussions of participatory communications, and governance  from development studies.
